加州, Arizona Water Agencies Partner To Advance Development of Large-Scale 再生水 Project
10月. 13, 2021

Building on increased collaboration on the 科罗拉多河, water agencies in Southern 加州 and Arizona have forged a new partnership to advance development of one of the largest water 回收 plants in the country – a project that would help restore balance to the over-stressed river.

通过 一项协议 approved Tuesday by Metropolitan Water District’s 董事会, the Central Arizona Project and Arizona Department of Water 资源 will contribute up to $6 million to environmental planning of the 区域循环水计划, a project to purify treated wastewater to produce a new, drought-proof water supply for Southern 加州. Southern Nevada Water Authority signed a 类似的协议 with Metropolitan earlier this year.

如果完全开发,3美元.4 billion project would produce up to 150 million gallons daily, 足够500多人吃,000个家庭.

“This project could help the entire Southwest. We know that eliminating the supply-demand imbalance that threatens the 科罗拉多河 will take both reducing demand, 通过保护, 增加新的供给, 比如循环水,” Metropolitan 总经理 Adel Hagekhalil说. “That’s why our partners in the Lower Basin are interested in helping us develop the project.”

The initial investment from Arizona could lead to a long-term agreement with the agencies to help fund the project’s construction and operation – helping offset the project’s significant cost for Metropolitan – in exchange for 科罗拉多河 water, Hagekhalil说. But more re搜索 and planning must be conducted before such a long-term partnership could be developed, 他补充说.

Environmental planning work on the project began last year and will take approximately three years, 耗资约3000万美元. 的188bet棋牌平台, including a Program Environmental Impact 报告 and engineering and technical studies, will help determine the value and feasibility of developing the full-scale project.

根据新的协议, the Central Arizona Project will contribute $5 million and the Arizona Department of Water 资源 will contribute $1 million to this planning work.

“We are eager to further our partnership with the Metropolitan Water District to collaboratively explore and develop opportunities to improve the long-term reliability and resiliency of our shared resource – the 科罗拉多河,” said Central Arizona Project 总经理 Ted Cooke.

The latest agreement reinforces the long-standing commitment between 加州 and Arizona to work together to develop solutions on the 科罗拉多河, 包括增加供应, 保护和贮存. 这种伙伴关系, together with Metropolitan’s collaboration with Nevada, will be critical as the 科罗拉多河 Basin states begin to create new operating guidelines for the river. The current guidelines are set to expire in 2025.

“Increasing the reuse of recycled water is critical to augmenting water supplies and creating a more resilient 科罗拉多河,” said Arizona Department of Water 资源 Director Tom Buschatzke.

Expanding the value of the 区域循环水计划 to the entire Southwest could also help earn federal financial support for the project.
